I too remember these phones. This one appears to be missing its hand crank. There was a crank on the side that you used to ring the operator, as I recall, when you wished to place a call.
I love vintage telephones. I have a friend who worked for AT&T years ago. She has several different vintage phones in her home, some were made into lamps.
